What Was the Winter 2020-2021 Forecast for the Midwest?

Temperatures were predicted to compare to 30-year averages in much of the midwestern United States, with some severe weather events throughout the Midwest. And the prediction of the early arrival of Arctic winds gave plenty of time to prepare for the disruptive snows and ice.

In the northern and midwestern United States, there was indeed plenty of snow in mid and late winter. With blizzards and gusting Arctic winds in Christmas and mid-February, there were temperature drops in the range from -30 to -40 °F, with strong winds around 60 mph in the Great Lake region.

Between 2021-2022, the United States should brace itself for an unpredictable winter, combined with the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. As usual, in winter months, businesses and offices need to take extra precautions to make work and retail as safe as possible, including the clearing of snow from driveways, entryways, and parking lots.

Midwest Winter Forecast 2021-2022

This year, a near-normal amount of snowfall from coast to coast has been predicted by the Farmer's Almanac. Winter in the Midwest will be cold and flaky in January, with a blizzard forecast later in the month. In general, the Midwest is likely to experience a typical weather pattern, including some sizable storms, yet they won't produce enough rainfall to assuage the current drought.

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says that any chances of an El Niño Midwest winter will be eclipsed by La Niña returning between November 2021 and January 2022. This will create a wetter than average winter in the eastern Midwest, particularly Ohio Valley, where it will likely cause earlier snowfall.

Winter weather forecast for Midwest

January is expected to be an overall stormy period with a mix of rain, snow, sleet, and ice. The Great Lakes and Midwest will experience a bitter cold and tumultuous first month of winter, with temperatures decreasing towards the end of the month.

February should bring calmer skies, however, the Farmers Almanac has also predicted a "winter whopper" for the Northwest, with several winter storms in the Midwest predicted throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The eastern third of the U.S. will experience 57% fewer days of measurable precipitation in comparison to January, which is a significant drop-off compared to previous years.

Emergency snow removal

Around the time of the Vernal Equinox on March 20, the Midwest will experience much colder temperatures than usual. The entire winter will be bookended by freezing conditions, with a pause in wintry weather in the middle of the season, making it as unpredictable as ever.

Keep in mind that these kinds of long-term predictions are not reliable, since the weather can change drastically in a short term.

How to Prepare for the Midwest Winter 2021-2022

The combination of precipitation and melting snow makes outdoor surfaces slippery, posing risks to vehicles and people. The return of La Niña for the second year in a row brings the opportunity for snow to freeze over parking lots, pavements, walkways, and entryways.

This is where Earth Development can help, especially during challenging weather conditions, when snow needs to be urgently removed from critical access points. We deliver up-to-date weather reports and have a team of snow removal experts across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio.
