SanDisk or Lexar?

May 10, 2018

1

I was reading some posts on Facebook from fellow pros and the topic of the failure rate of high-end Lexar vs. SanDisk cards came up. The Facebook 'togs were singing the praises of SanDisk while saying they had considerably more Lexar failures.

Now personally, I've shot thousands of assignments on Lexar cards and never suffered a single failure, but I've also been using Lexar CF + SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards and the SanDisk was fine, too.

So, my question is: do you have first hand knowledge of a pro-quality Lexar or SanDisk CF or SD card failure? (SD or CF/manufacturer?) Please restrict it to Lexar and SanDisk or this is going to go off the rails in a hurry!

I think it might be useful to have a real-world comparison between these two.

fishy wishy

I've read the same sort of thing as you, but I've used 6x the number of Sandisk as Lexar so my experience wouldn't say much.

Komputerbay allegedly used to get the surplus out of production runs once Lexar had got enough that passed their speed binning. I've had cameras that didn't like Komputerbay cards, that's for sure.

I've had exactly one San Disk fail

My first digital camera which used memory cards (my first digital camera used a floppy disk, if that gives you some idea how old I am ) and was an Olympus E-10. I probably only average 15,000 or so images a year using a fairly large number of cards, but I've had exactly one SanDisk card fail. I rather suspect it was an eBay China counterfeit card. I've never had a Lexar card fail, but then I've probably never owned more than half a dozen.

A personal opinion, based on the above experience and not very much of anything else, is that it probably doesn't make a ratsazz which one you use on a hobby basis. If you shoot professional and burn up 10's of thousands of images a year I would think you have a better grip on the issue than I do.

Over the past 15+ year only one has failed me (Kensington).    I mostly bought the higher spec Sandisks, though, haven't had issues with them at all.

It went from Micron-Lexar to Longsys-Lexar, and the new ownership may or may not have effected quality.

Re: SanDisk or Lexar?

My impression is that posts about Lexar card failures in DPR forums outnumber those about Sandisk failures about 10 to 1.

I had a complete failure of one Lexar CF card 7 or 8 years ago. Fortunately, it happened after I uploaded all images from it.

For last 3 or so years I use only SD UHS-I, mostly Lexar:

- 2 SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC with DSLR;
- 5 or 6 Lexar Pro SDXC with 4K camcorder and audio recorder;
- Lexar Platinum II SDHC with P&S.

No failures to report.

I don't shoot nearly as much as you, but I also use both brands.  I've had one failure and it was a Sandisk 32 gig SD card.  But, I still use Sandisk cards.  Failures are very rare, indeed.

Re: SanDisk or Lexar?

I use a mixture of Sandisk and Lexar SD and XQD.  Never had a failure of either brand.

Re: SanDisk or Lexar?

I had two features with the Lexar 200X 32GB cards. Lexar replaced it. Now days I would not buy Lexar any more after they stoped and the failures I had. There is no more warranty for it any more. So switched to the Sony cards.

when i got my new em52 it uses ush2 cards and the lexar cards where 1/3 cost of sandisk extreme pro. the lexar died with in 2 weeks , got a replacement and the second did the same 3 weeks later. so they replaced it with a sandisk extreme pro no problems with it been 1 year now.

Where were you buying them? i.e. were you sure they were genuine.

Kind of a moot point, since Lexar is no longer manufacturing memory cards.

The only issue is that the capacity of cards increase quickly enough that I have a drawer full of old cards. NONE, not a single one, has ever gone bad. I'm up to two 64GB on my D7000 and two 128GB on my D7200. The 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards are languishing but still viable if I should ever feel the need - which hasn't happened in years.  And I use both variants.

I do like the Sandisk cards as well, I do think that Lexar and Sandisk are the most liable brands.
